Kay Bloom – Full Time Coffee Painter!

Something that caught my eye while reading about Kay Bloom is that she lists her occupation as “full time coffee painter.” This is something that has eluded me for some time now. I'm very impressed that she is able to make a living at painting with coffee.

After coming across Kay Bloom's video on YouTube I made a visit to her MySpace page – www.myspace.com/stainedcoffee to learn more about this artist. Kay keeps an impressive collection of images ranging from coffee related subject matter to iconic portraits to ethnic history.

KAY's Blurbs – About Me: 

“I started entering art contests at the age of 9 despite my mothers disapproval. I entered several contests and won first place. I finally told my mother at the age of 15 I had been competing in art contests but before she could get angry I showed her all the money that I had won. We had very little money at the time and I had made enough money to buy the extra things that we needed. From that point on my mother was very supportive of me spending time practicing my art and entering contests.”

“I like creating art with many mediums charcoal, acrylic, pastel, pencil, and my favorite coffee. I started experimenting painting with coffee at the age of 20. As a kid I had helped my grandfather pick and dry coffee. Once I was in college I had so little money that I need to experiment with alternative mediums. Coffee was a perfect choice of paint. The oil in the coffee help to give the paintings a shine and textured look. I think the coffee gives my paintings a renaissance feel and accentuates the sole of my subject matter.”

No Such Animal Studios has found a new home!

No Such Animal Studios has found a new home! Over the past few years Ezju has been busy working at Boeing and raising a family. It’s time to get back to art!

Early February Ezju will be moving his art studio into a 600+ sq/ft space at 14802 Bothell Way NE Seattle, WA 98155. The new studio doesn’t have a number assigned to it yet but that is in the works. This new studio space will also serve as the new location of Ph’Kaki Media and Design, Ezju’s design company. The best part is the new space even has a window!

It’s been over 3 years since the last painting in Ezju’s Coffee Culture multi-series. With the accusation of a new home for the studio more work to this series will be produced in 2009 covering the lifestyle of Coffee Culture in Seattle to emulations of barista latte art. Also in the concept stage is a new series, Coffee Noir.

All of Ezju’s Coffee Culture multi-series are painted using coffee as not just a subject matter but also as an artistic medium. For more information on Ezju and his work please visit www.nosuchanimal.net.

Seattle's Coffee Artist - Ezju Live with Kathy Goertzen

Right after John Sharify of KOMO 4 News ran his feature on Seattle's Coffee Artist entitled "Only in Seattle: Artist Paints with Coffee" Ezju appeared live, interviewed by the Emerald City's Kathy Goertzen!



Kathy Goertzen was very kind and fun, she even had on leather pants! Not what I was expecting at all. She made me feel right at home even though I was terrified. What if I said the wrong thing or froze? It all come off very well I think!

During the John Sharify feature I was filmed painting a piece called The Morning News. Kathy Goertzen gave me the opportunity to show off the finished work live! She asked how I got started painting with coffee and followed up to the new work.



On a side note, right behind me waiting in line for his chance on TV was the Republican candidate for the then (and oddly enough this years) race for the Washington state governors office. He came on some time after me and the whales in Puget Sound!

For those who don't know, Ezju is a Seattle based artist who uses coffee not just as a subject matter but also as an artistic medium. His work centers around coffee culture and the coffee industry with a strong emphasis on the commodities effect on world cultures and vise versa. Ezju is also the lead graphic designer and art director at Ph'Kaki Media & Design.
